Water companies push for higher bills
Water companies in the UK, including Thames and Southern Water, are proposing significant bill increases, with Southern Water seeking an 84% rise by 2030 and Thames Water requesting a 53% hike.
These increases aim to fund essential upgrades to water networks and manage rising energy costs. Thames Water, burdened by £15 billion in debt, faces heightened scrutiny, particularly due to frequent sewage discharges. Public dissatisfaction and calls for renationalisation are growing, but the government currently opposes this move.

One thing is for certain, we’re likely to see increases in what we all pay for our water over the coming months and years. However, it does seem like a necessary change. In recent water matters podcast episodes, we discuss the behavioural changes necessary from the general public in relation to water management. Typically, what affects people’s wallets gets attention. Just think about the increases in energy prices throughout 2023 and 2024. Everyone was talking about it! It really got people’s attention and led to behavioural change. It might not be the change people wish to see - is anyone really looking forward to paying much higher bills for their water supply?! - however it does seem inevitable. It will certainly be a topic of discussion for future episodes of the water matters podcast.
